چکیده

While heterotrophic microorganisms constitute the major fraction of activated sludge biomass, role heterotrophs in biotransformation organic micropollutants (OMPs) has not been fully elucidated. Yet, such knowledge is essential, particularly when conceiving novel wastewater treatment plants based on a two-stage process including an A-stage under conditions and B-stage anammox activity. Biotransformation OMPs thought to mostly occur cometabolically thanks action low specificity enzymes involved metabolism primary substrates. For better understanding process, it important determine enzymatic activities underlying mechanisms biotransformation. This task proven be difficult due lack information about processes complexity biological systems present sludge. In this paper, continuous aerobic reactor following 20 at environmental concentrations was operated (i) assess potential during cometabolic OMPs, (ii) identify reactions catalyzed by (iii) predict possible responsible for biotransformations. Contradicting previous reports dominant nitrifiers removal treatment, population proved its capacity biotransform extents equivalent reported values nitrifying plants. Besides, 12 transformation products potentially formed through activity several heterotrophs, monooxygenases, dioxygenases, hydrolases transferases, were identified.

Treatment of Gaseous Volatile Organic Compounds in Activated Sludge System

An activated sludge aeration tank (W × L × H = 40 × 40 × 300 cm) with a set of 2 mm orifice air spargers was utilized to treat gas-borne volatile organic compounds (VOCs, toluene, p-xylene, and dichloromethane) in air streams. Effects of liquid depth, aeration intensity (G/A), overall mass transfer coefficient of oxygen in clean water (KLaO2), dimensionless Henry’s law coefficient of the tested...

Aerobic Heterotrophic Bacterial Populations of Sewage and Activated Sludge: III. Adaptation in a Synthetic Waste.

The nature and behavior of the microbial population developed on a synthetic waste containing salts and sorbitol are compared to that of a treatment-plant activated sludge. The population of the adapted sludge developed on the synthetic waste consisted approximately of only six kinds of bacteria. Experiments with radioactive sorbitol indicate that the microbial population developed on the synth...

Assessing potential modifications to the activated sludge process to improve simultaneous removal of a diverse range of micropollutants.

It is proposed that wastewater treatment facilities meet legislated discharge limits for a range of micropollutants. However, the heterogeneity of these micropollutants in wastewaters make removal difficult to predict since their chemistry is so diverse. In this study, a range of organic and inorganic micropollutants known to be preferentially removed via different mechanisms were selected to c...

HENRY’S LAW CONSTANTS OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN ACTIVATED SLUDGE AND WASTEWATER ... 181 Henry’s law constants of volatile organic compounds in activated sludge and wastewater at 298 K

Henry’s law constant is an important equilibrium factor in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mass transfer process. The air-water dimensionless Henry’s law constants (KH) and the dimensionless apparent Henry’s law constants (K’H) in air-activated sludge mixed liquor and air-wastewater system for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured at 298K. Hydrophilic VOCs (isopropanol and acetone) ...

A Comparative Study of the Efficiency of Granular Activated Sludge and Common Activated Sludge in the Removal of Chromium (VI) from Synthetic Solutions

Introduction: Aerobic granules as a novel type of bio-sorbent have an excellent settling ability and high-porosity structure. This study investigated the feasibility of aerobic granules for chromium (VI) removal from synthetic aqueous solution and compare it with conventional activated sludge. Method: In this research the effect of some important parameters including pH (5, 7, and 9), initial c...
